The People’s Republic of China is a true gem in East Asia. With an extremely popular, iconic, and adored culture by many people outside of the country, China certainly has made quite an impression with its unique culture. This land has a rich history and has many attractions for visitors to experience, be it in the country’s natural beauty, its many ancient landmarks, or its modern marvels. Here are the recommended places to visit and things to do when in China.

Walk the Great Wall of China

To keep with tradition, let’s address the elephant in the room first. No trip to China would be complete without visiting the Great Wall, one of the most iconic structures in the world. Stretching over 13,000 miles, this awe-inspiring architectural marvel offers stunning views and a glimpse into China’s fascinating history. The wall consists of numerous different sections, with the more popular ones being Badaling and Mutianyu, and the “most beautiful”, Jinshanling. The Great Wall is an icon within itself and has been depicted in numerous films and books. Some folks recommend having a nice picnic, and it is said that walking here at night-time is beyond beautiful. All in all, this site is bucket-list material and should be visited when in China.

Explore the Forbidden City

Located in the heart of Beijing, the Forbidden City is a massive palace complex that once served as the home of Chinese emperors. The name “Forbidden” came to be when access to the city was once restricted to the Imperial family and anyone who had business within it.  With 980 buildings spread across 180 acres, this UNESCO World Heritage site boasts intricate architecture, exquisite art, and captivating stories about China’s imperial past. Some incredible things to see here include the Dragon Throne inside the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the many Dragon Head spouts located along the Sumeru-terrace of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, and the cast bronze lion statues that can be found here. The Forbidden City acts as a great time capsule to capture China’s exquisite architecture of the past.

Discover the Terracotta Army

Here’s another famous collection that has been depicted in films and stories. In Xi’an, you’ll find the extraordinary Terracotta Army, an impressive collection of life-sized terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor. The army was made to escort and protect the emperor in the afterlife, according to traditional Chinese belief at the time. Unearthed in 1974, this archaeological wonder features over 8,000 soldiers, horses, and chariots, each with distinct facial expressions and poses. It truly is a great collection to visit and is highly recommended!
