When thinking about Morocco, what comes to mind? Sun, Desert, Camels, and Carpets?

You’re not alone in thinking this. When talking to people I found that many know the name but know very little about the actual country. In this blog, we are going to explore more about Morocco so that we can put those preconceptions aside and learn more about this fascinating country.

Location and Culture

Morocca is an Islamic Country situated in the North West part of Africa. Its full Arabic name is al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyyah (المملكة المغربية) which can be directly translated to ‘Kingdom of the West’.  It is currently run by Mohamed IV and according to https://www.lesjardinsdelamedina.com, “The Moroccan monarchy originated from an oasis on the Red Sea coast of Arabia. It is directly descended from the Prophet Mohammed through his daughter Fatima and his cousin and son-in-law Ali Ibn AbiTalib. The Alouites have ruled Morocco since the 17th century.”

Morocco has a very diversified culture. They have a large influence of Jewish, Arab, African and Berber customs. Their architecture is also a blend of Roman, Modern, French, Spanish and Berber which makes for a very interesting place to visit.

They are considered a very tolerant culture in contrast to some Arabic nations but are still very traditional in values. A few things to know before coming to Morocco is that some practices which are widely accepted in the western world are strongly prohibited here.

Homosexuality and premarital sex are illegal. It carries a 6 Month to 3-year Imprisonment if you are caught. Violence against Women and sexual harassment has now become a criminal offense and punishable with fines from $200 to 5 years in jail. Perhaps the harshest punishment and law we might find odd from a Western perspective involves the attempt to try convert people to a different religion other than Islam. You are free to practice whatever religion you want in your own home, but if you are found handing out bibles or pushing any other religion you can find yourself in prison for up to 15 years.

Food and Tourism

Morocco is a very popular destination for Hollywood movie production with film sets for major blockbuster movies such as Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven, Game of Thrones, John Wick 3, and Indiana Jones to name a few.

As mentioned, there is such a diverse influence on their culture and this has definitely been carried over into their food. Moroccan food is often described as a fusion of European, Mediterranean, and Moorish Cuisines with Beef taking the top spot in their meet options with chicken as a second favourite.  This definitely makes for an interesting taste experience when eating at one of their many street markets.

There is a lot to do for tourists in Morocco in both the scorching hot weather in Summer and the icy cold Snow in Winter – Morocco has it all. Book a really spectacular 3-day tour with all-inclusive food, accommodation, and Camel Tours through the desert or some really amazing hot air balloon tours, quad biking, and mountain hikes. Whatever you decide to do, you will be amazed at the experience and hospitality of the locals.
